How not to drown in the ocean
¿Cómo no ahogarse en el océano?
How not to drown in the ocean.
Every year thousands of tourists drowning worldwide. And drowning not somewhere far away, on the uncrowded beaches — most of them drown at the crowded and most popular places. Just 50 meters from the shore. Why is this happening? Why do people who can swim drown close to the shore? And they drown, regardless of age, sex and physical condition — even good athletes sometimes cannot swim back. Because they behave incorrectly in the ocean, do not know the basics of safety and panic at a critical moment. In this article, I will tell you about the most common accidents in the ocean. On the reverse currents, that called channels, that could very fast pull you to the open ocean. It is called — rip current.Let’s start with the theory:
The ocean is not the sea and the river, and especially not to the lake with calm water. Ocean thing could be much more complicated and dangerous. Tides are created by the gravitational attraction of the Moon and the Sun on the Earth and its oceans, have a direct effect on the nature of the waves.
During low tide, you can face open rocks or reefs, which was not at this place six hours earlier. Typically, in this case, the waves become steeper and break away from the shore.
During high tides waves are usually softer, and slowly crashing. Tides can also cause reverse flow of water, which are formed when the waves hit the rocks and shoals on the coast and because of the rebound(ricochet) go back into the sea.
Imagine: ocean waves that repeatedly rolled ashore and bring more and more water. But this water mass don’t left on the beach and go back into the ocean. But how? By channels, which are formed as a result of waves crashing. Here’s how it looks schematically:
That mean that , wave is breaking on the coastal shallows, and then accumulating in a certain place goes back to the ocean, forming a reverse flow. It’s like a river in the ocean. And this is the most dangerous place on the entire beach! Flow velocity in the channel reaches 2-3 meters per second and once it take you , you immediately will be pulled out from the shore. At this point, most people start to panic, they begin to desperately fight over and with all possible force paddle toward the shore. And the waves are all cover and cover and person lost all power, and then man drowns.
This is the reason more than of half of all deaths in the ocean!
The most dangerous thing is that you can be in such a channel, even standing waist or chest in water. That is confident feeling when you feel the bottom and then you suddenly begins abruptly sucked into the ocean! So what to do if you got to reverse course and, despite your best efforts, you are pulled to the ocean?
There are some basic rules that you should always remember and keep in mind:
1. DO NOT PANIC!
Panic is the enemy in any extreme situation. When people panic, instead of a sober assessment of the situation and make the right decisions, they is guided by their instincts and in most of cases do opposite what they should do.
2. SAVE YOUR POWER!
Don’t fight over and to paddle with all all possible energy back to the shore. It’s useless. You will not have the strength to overcome the force of the flow in channel. You have not to paddle to shore –but you should paddle sideway — parallel to the shore!
3. NOT SWIM ALONE in the ocean!
The golden rule is – if you are not sure, don’t go! Try to swim at the beaches, where except of you, are more people, and it is really desirable — rescuers.
Here is a scheme of right actions in case if you was catched by the backflow:
There are several important points to be aware of and it is important to remember:
— Channel you never carry you to the bottom! Reverse flow occurs on the surface, does not form funnels or whirlpools. Channel drag you out from the shore, but not at the depth.
— The channel is not wide! Typically, the channel width does not exceed 50 meters. And most of all is only 10-20 meters. It means that if you will swim along the shore just 20-30 meters, you will feel that you went out from the channel.
— Length of the channel is limited! Flow quite rapidly weakens, channel ends his «job» where the waves reach their peak and begin to break. On surfer’s slang it’s called «line up. This is usually not more than 100 meters from the shore.
Here’s how the channel looks at life:
So you can see that the channel have even different colour of water, comparing with the rest of the water mass. In this case, it raised by waves coastal sand from shoal, which channel delivered back to the ocean. The fact that the sand just on the surface of the water, shows that the reverse flow is formed only on the surface.
How to «see» the channel?
All channels have their own characteristics:
If you see something out of the described, consider yourself as lucky, and just don’t go swim in this place. And what if you do not see any of this four criteria? So you’re out of luck, because 80 percent of spontaneously occurring dangerous «channels» (flash rips) does not manifest itself visually. Ofcourse professional rescuers can define it, but usual tourist – unlikely.
In most cases, there are flags on the beaches that can change their location during the day. Color of flags is the same throughout the world and very easy to remember:
Red and yellow flag indicates that there are lifeguards on the beach and between this flags you can swim safely.
Red flag — swim in that place (between the red flags) is strictly forbidden!
Sometimes you look at the ocean — small waves, and on the beach is a red flag. And when at this point, you still want to get into the ocean to swim — remember about the course and about what is written here.
Theory is a great power — sometimes basic knowledge of some basics things can save your life.
Therefore, if you are stay at the ocean always remember about elementary safety. Tell about it to your friends and relatives. This information is clearly not excess baggage of your knowledge.
After that I’ve made short information for A4 paper, and put it in few hostels around me. Here is it
(and I hope that at least some of you will do the same( and be sure — if you will do it, you will save few lifes for sure! ) ).
— Canal nunca jallar tu abajo!
